Project

CFGA is the national voice for all sectors of the forage and grassland industry, formed in 2010 to provide a national voice for all Canadians who produce hay and forage products, and for those whose production is dependent upon forage and grassland production.

CFGA has multiple interactive websites nationwide, in all provinces with a forage and agriculture industry. All of them were being updated at once, by a third party developer whose ownership had changed hands – and the timelines were in jeopardy, and the clients at CFGA felt out of control of their own software and business tools.

Vertical Motion entered the picture with a detailed application health assessment, reporting in plainspoken language and substantiated facts to CFGA that their projects were at risk of failure. To resolve the breakdown of progress, CFGA initiated a fractional CTO relationship and Vertical Motion began to project manage the nine critical deadlines leading into spring.

Solution

Vertical Motion immediately initiated hands-on project management principles, including regular status meetings, a (previously absent) full software status and ticketing system, an analysis of current progress and requirements, and initiation of Q&A and software testing routines.

Remote team management is a specific skillset in extensive use for these multiple project sites. To support forward momentum and reduce regression errors, testing automation was built in to the process, to catch mistakes if they slipped back in to the critical path.

Beyond project management, back-end software support in deploying new systems and centralizing infrastructure was performed, assisting the third-party developers over the finish line, while simultaneously securing the intellectual property for CFGA.

Like many recovery projects, this one required a swiftly built foundation of trust, supported by experience, integrity, and the facts and reporting in the Application Health Assessment. Vertical Motion became the technology authority in defense of CFGA's vital deadlines and intellectual property.
"We are agriculture experts, not technical experts, but our organization depends on technology to serve our members. To operate successfully and serve the membership, we need a high level of trust with our developer and software team, and we were in trouble when our previous developer changed hands and resources went offshore. It's been a relief to be able to depend on the advice and insight of the team at Vertical Motion."
